Permit Test Key Details
Number of Questions: 50
Correct Answers Needed to Pass: 40
Passing Score: 80%
Minimum Age to Apply: 14 years 9 months (for teen / Level 1 permit)
Documents Needed
- Proof of Identity. Birth certificate, U.S. passport, certificate of naturalization
- Proof of Legal Presence / Citizenship. Immigration documents (if non-citizen)
- Proof of Social Security Number. Social Security card, W-2, pay stub, SSA-1099
- Proof of Residency / Address. Utility bill, lease/mortgage statement, school record, bank statement
- Proof of Driver Education / Enrollment. For minors, certificate of completion or proof of enrollment in state-approved driver education
- Parental / Guardian Consent. If applicant is under 18, a parent or legal guardian generally must sign
- Fee Payment. The application / permit / licensing fee
- Vision / Eye Exam. In-office vision screening at DMV / licensing office
What happens if I don’t pass the test?
- For the online test (for adults 18+), you may take it up to 2 times per calendar day (paying the fee each time)
- For failed written / knowledge tests generally, you must wait at least one day before retesting
- For teen permit (under 18), failure attempts are limited: you get up to 3 attempts within 90 days; if you fail all three or delay beyond 90 days, you must restart the application.
