Correct Answers Needed to Pass: 20
Passing Score: 80%
Minimum Age to Apply: 14 years old (for a “School Learner’s Permit” / permit that allows supervised driving)
Test Duration: 25 minutes
Documents Needed
- Proof of Identity. Birth certificate, U.S. passport, certificate of naturalization
- Proof of Legal Presence / Citizenship. Immigration documents (if non-citizen)
- Proof of Social Security Number. Social Security card, W-2, pay stub, SSA-1099
- Proof of Residency / Address. Utility bill, lease/mortgage statement, school record, bank statement
- Proof of Driver Education / Enrollment. For minors, certificate of completion or proof of enrollment in state-approved driver education
- Parental / Guardian Consent. If applicant is under 18, a parent or legal guardian generally must sign
- Fee Payment. The application / permit / licensing fee
- Vision / Eye Exam. In-office vision screening at DMV / licensing office
What happens if I don’t pass the test?
If you fail, you may retake the knowledge test as early as the next business day. For minors / permit applicants: You typically have three attempts within a 90-day window. If you fail all three or let that period lapse, you must reapply for the permit.
