Correct Answers Needed to Pass: 21
Passing Score: 70%
Minimum Age to Apply: 15 years
Test Duration: Approximately 30-60 minutes

Documents Needed

  • Proof of Identity — One primary document or a combination of secondary + supporting documents.
  • Proof of U.S. Citizenship or Lawful Presence — for non-citizens, valid immigration documents.
  • Proof of Social Security Number — e.g. your Social Security card or other acceptable document.
  • Proof of Texas Residency — two different documents showing name and Texas address. If you cannot, a Texas Residency Affidavit (Form DL-5) may be needed.
  • Proof of Driver Education / Course — for teens, a certificate (DE-964) or proof of enrollment in a DPS-approved driver education course.
  • Verification of School Enrollment (VOE) — for applicants under 18, a form or document showing you are currently enrolled in school and meeting attendance requirements.
  • Application Form — e.g. DL-14A or DL-14B, signed by parent/guardian if under 18.
  • Fee Payment — the learner license application fee (typically $16)
  • Proof of Insurance & Vehicle Registration — if you or your parent owns a vehicle, proof of Texas insurance and registration for that vehicle. If you don’t own one, you may have to sign a statement to that effect.
What happens if I don’t pass the test?

You can retake the written exam multiple times. A waiting period of 1 business day is often required between attempts.
