Prepare for the Texas DPS Learner License Test
Getting your Texas learner license (also known as a learner permit) is the first step in the Texas Graduated Driver License (GDL) program. To qualify, teens must pass the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) written knowledge exam covering state traffic laws, road signs, and safe-driving practices.
Texas roads include everything from rural highways to major urban interstates, which makes understanding state-specific driving laws essential. This practice test helps you prepare using realistic questions modeled after the official exam.
What the Texas Permit Test Includes
The Texas written exam typically includes 30 questions, and you must answer at least 21 correctly to pass.
This practice test focuses on topics such as:
- Texas speed limits on highways, farm-to-market roads, and residential streets
- Right-of-way rules at intersections and railroad crossings
- School bus safety laws (a major Texas exam focus)
- Lane usage, passing rules, and freeway driving basics
- Distracted driving and handheld device laws
- DUI laws and zero-tolerance rules for drivers under 21
These are some of the most commonly tested areas on the Texas DPS exam.
Tips for Passing the Texas Knowledge Test
- Read every question carefully, Texas tests often include real-world scenarios.
- Don’t memorize answers; focus on understanding safe-driving principles.
- Re-take the practice test until you consistently score 90–95%.
- Review the Texas Driver Handbook sections related to your missed questions.
After You Finish the Practice Test
We recommend reviewing:
- Texas learner license restrictions and supervised driving rules
- What to bring to the DPS for your permit appointment
- How the Texas GDL program progresses from learner license to provisional license
- Safe-driving habits to practice during your required driving hours
Strong preparation now builds confidence for both the test and Texas roadways.
