Prepare for the New Jersey MVC Knowledge Exam

Getting your New Jersey learner permit is the first step toward driving legally and safely on some of the busiest roads in the country. From dense suburban traffic to major highways like the Garden State Parkway and New Jersey Turnpike, New Jersey drivers must understand precise traffic laws and defensive-driving rules.

The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) written knowledge exam focuses heavily on safety, responsibility, and state-specific driving laws. This practice test is designed to help you prepare confidently by covering the topics most likely to appear on the official exam.

What the New Jersey Permit Test Includes

The New Jersey permit test consists of 50 multiple-choice questions, and you must answer at least 40 correctly to pass (80%).

This practice test focuses on New Jersey-specific topics such as:

  • Right-of-way rules at intersections, jughandles, and uncontrolled roads
  • Speed limits in residential areas, business districts, school zones, and highways
  • Traffic signs, signals, and pavement markings used throughout New Jersey
  • New Jersey’s strict seat belt and passenger safety laws
  • DUI laws and zero-tolerance rules for drivers under 21
  • Safe driving practices in heavy traffic, construction zones, and urban areas

Many exam questions are scenario-based, meaning understanding why a rule exists is just as important as memorizing it.

Tips to Succeed on the New Jersey Knowledge Exam

  • Read every question carefully—New Jersey exams often test judgment and decision-making.
  • Take the practice test multiple times and track patterns in missed questions.
  • Pay extra attention to right-of-way rules and traffic signs, which are common trouble areas.
  • Aim for 90% or higher on practice tests before scheduling your MVC appointment.

After Completing the Practice Test

Before heading to the MVC, review:

  • New Jersey learner permit restrictions under the Graduated Driver License (GDL) program
  • What documents you need to bring for your permit appointment
  • Supervised driving requirements and practice hour expectations
  • Tips for safe driving on highways, local roads, and in high-congestion areas

Preparing thoroughly now helps you pass the New Jersey permit test—and develop safe habits that last long after exam day.
