Virginia Driver’s Handbook
Prepare for the Virginia DMV Knowledge Exam
To get your Virginia learner’s permit, you must pass a two-part knowledge exam that evaluates your understanding of Virginia traffic laws, safe-driving practices, and road signs. This practice test is designed to help you prepare using real-world questions modeled after the topics most commonly found on the official exam.
The exam uses computerized testing, and the first part focuses solely on road signs—meaning you must pass that section before moving on to the general knowledge portion.
Structure of the Virginia DMV Permit Test
The Virginia knowledge exam has two required parts:
Part 1 — Road Signs (10 questions)
You must get all 10 correct to continue to Part 2.
Part 2 — General Knowledge (25 questions)
You must score at least 20 out of 25 to pass.
Because Part 1 is “all or nothing,” practicing sign meanings is extremely important.
Topics Included in This Virginia DMV Practice Test
This practice test covers essential Virginia driving laws including:
- Right-of-way rules for intersections, pedestrians, and emergency vehicles
- Rules for school zones and school buses (a major exam topic)
- Speed limits on Virginia highways, business areas, and residential streets
- Safe following distances and maintaining space cushions
- DUI penalties, zero-tolerance laws for teens, and consequences of refusing a breath test
- Road sign meanings, shapes, colors, and pavement markings
These match the most frequently tested areas in the official Virginia exam.
How to Use This Test for Best Results
- Aim for consistent scores of 90% or better; that’s a strong sign you’re ready.
- Read explanations after each question to reinforce the correct reasoning.
- Study the Virginia Driver Manual sections you struggle with most—especially right-of-way and road signs.
- Don’t rush; the real exam rewards careful reading.
After You Complete the DMV Practice Test
We suggest reviewing:
- Any categories where you missed more than 1 question
- Virginia’s specific rules for learners under age 18
